Frequently asked questions

HMRC reviews rates periodically, typically announcing any changes in the annual budget.

Yes, but you must keep separate records for each vehicle and apply the correct rate based on vehicle type.

The calculation multiplies your total miles by the appropriate HMRC rate. For cars and vans, the first 10,000 miles in a tax year are calculated at 45p per mile, with additional miles at 25p per mile.

For example:

8,000 miles = 8,000 × 45p = £3,600

12,000 miles = (10,000 × 45p) + (2,000 × 25p) = £4,500 + £500 = £5,000

Motorcycles and bicycles use a single rate regardless of total miles:

Motorcycles: 24p per mile

Bicycles: 20p per mile

Our calculator handles these calculations automatically, including the rate change after 10,000 miles.

HMRC requires you to keep:

  • A log of each business journey

  • Dates and times of travel

  • Start and end locations

  • Purpose of each trip

  • Total miles driven

  • Vehicle details if using multiple vehicles.

Keep these records for at least five years after the tax year they relate to.

Yes, electric cars are reimbursed at the same rates as petrol and diesel vehicles.

You may be able to claim tax relief on the difference through your self-assessment.
